  1. Lotus 1-2-3 .WK4 File Converter Readme 
  2.  
  3. The Lotus 1-2-3 .WK4 file converter provides the functionality to easily
  4. convert your existing Lotus 1-2-3 version 4.0 and 5.0 files for Windows
  5. into Microsoft Excel 5.0 files.
  6.  
  7. Note that the Lotus 1-2-3 .WK4 file converter is not designed to work with
  8. Microsoft Excel for Windows NT.
  9.  
  10. Network Setup 
  11. ------------- 
  12.  
  13. If you want to copy the files to a network server and run the Setup
  14. program from the server to install the converter to each workstation, you
  15. must copy the files from the WE1130 disk to a directory named DISK1 on the
  16. server. The DISK1 directory may be a subdirectory of another directory,
  17. for example X:\WK4CONV\DISK1.
  18.  
  19. External References Not Converted 
  20. --------------------------------- 
  21.  
  22. When you open a file that refers to a name in another workbook, and the
  23. name is defined on a sheet other than the first worksheet in the workbook,
  24. the reference is not converted.
  25.  
  26. To convert the external reference, do the following: 
  27.  
  28. 1. In the workbook that contains the link, choose Links from 
  29.    the Edit menu. 
  30.  
  31. 2. Choose the Open Source button to open the supporting 
  32.    file. 
  33.  
  34. 3. Save the supporting file to the Microsoft Excel Workbook  
  35.    format. Then save the file that contains the link to the 
  36.    Microsoft Excel Workbook format. 
  37.  
  38. Large File Sizes 
  39. ---------------- 
  40.  
  41. When you open a Lotus 1-2-3 .WK4 file, and you save the file to the
  42. Microsoft Excel Workbook format, the file size may increase by a large
  43. amount.
  44.  
  45. This can occur if you apply formatting to an entire column or row. For
  46. example, if you select column C, apply a currency format, and then enter
  47. values in a few of the cells in column C, the file size may increase by a
  48. large amount when you save the file as a Microsoft Excel workbook.
  49.  
  50. To avoid a large increase in your file size, do the following: 
  51.  
  52. 1. Select all of the blank cells below and to the right of 
  53.    the last cell on your worksheet that contains data.  
  54.  
  55. 2. From the Edit menu, choose Delete. Choose OK. 
  56.  
  57. Cell Displays #VALUE! Error Value 
  58. --------------------------------- 
  59.  
  60. When you open a Lotus 1-2-3 .WK4 file in Microsoft Excel, if a cell on the
  61. worksheet displays the #VALUE! error value, even though the formula bar
  62. contains the correct formula, do the following to correct the value:
  63.  
  64. 1. Select the worksheet that contains the cell that is 
  65.    displaying the error value. 
  66.  
  67. 2. From the Edit menu, choose Replace. 
  68.  
  69. 3. In the Find What box, type "=" (without the quotation 
  70.    marks) and in the Replace With box, type "=" (without the 
  71.    quotation marks). Choose Replace All. 
  72.  
  73. This method enters each formula on the worksheet again, and assures that
  74. each cell on your worksheet is converted properly.
  75.  
  76. Note that if only one or two cells on your worksheet display the #VALUE
  77. error value, you can enter the individual value again by selecting the
  78. cell, pressing F2, and then pressing ENTER.
  79.  
  80. Error Message: "This document contains links. You can re-establish them
  81. with the Edit Links command"
  82. --------------------------------------------------------

  84. Because of the way that Microsoft Excel uses converters, if you are
  85. working with a file that contains external links, you must update the
  86. links manually. Once you've updated the links, you can resolve and
  87. calculate them by doing the following:
  88.  
  89. 1. From the Edit menu, choose Links. 
  90.  
  91. 2. In the Links box, select the appropriate file (or files), 
  92.    and choose Update Now or Open Source. 
  93.  
  94. Note that if you save the file in the Microsoft Excel file format (.XLS),
  95. you will not have to repeat this procedure.
  96.  
  97. Error Message: "This document contains formulas which failed to convert" 
  98. ------------------------------------------------------------ 
  99.  
  100. Certain functions are not compatible between Lotus 1-2-3 and Microsoft
  101. Excel. This error message indicates that the converted spreadsheet
  102. contains any number of these incompatible functions.
  103.  
  104. When you receive this error message, you must go through each sheet of the
  105. workbook and look for cell notes that are attached to error cells (these
  106. cells will also contain the #VALUE! error value).
  107.  
  108. To quickly find these cells, choose Note from the Insert menu in each
  109. sheet of the workbook. The Notes In Sheet box of the Cell Note dialog box
  110. will contain a list of cells that have functions that were not
  111. successfully converted.
  112.  
  113. You Are Unable to Use Converted WK3 Macros 
  114. ------------------------------------------ 
  115.  
  116. WK3 macros are supported to a very limited extent. When you use WK3
  117. macros, the following restrictions apply:
  118.  
  119.  - The commands in the macro must be backward compatible to 
  120.    Lotus 1-2-3 Release 2 (note that Release 2 lacks many of 
  121.    the macro commands available in Release 4). 
  122.  
  123.  - When you run the macro, the sheet containing the macro 
  124.    code must be active. 
  125.  
  126. NOTE: This restriction means that if you have a separate sheet containing
  127. the macro code, you cannot use those macros with data that is contained on
  128. a different sheet.
  129.  
  130. Drawing Layer Objects Are Not Converted 
  131. --------------------------------------- 
  132.  
  133. With the exception of chart objects, drawing layer objects are not
  134. converted. Drawing layer objects include macro buttons, text boxes, lines,
  135. arrows, and so on.
  136.  
  137. Worksheet Names Are Not Converted 
  138. --------------------------------- 
  139.  
  140. Worksheet names are not converted. Instead, worksheets are named A, B, C,
  141. and so on. 
  142.  
  143. Localized Lotus 1-2-3 Files 
  144. --------------------------- 
  145.  
  146. The Lotus 1-2-3 .WK4 file converter allows you to open any localized Lotus
  147. 1-2-3 .WK4 file, with the exception of Arabic and Far East languages in
  148. the US version of Microsoft Excel. Use of this converter is not supported
  149. in international versions of Microsoft Excel.
